United Nations Launches Extensive Study of Earth’s Ecosystems

On June 5, 2001, World Environment Day, the United Nations, scientific groups, governments, foundations, and other international agencies, launched the most extensive study of the state of the world’s ecosystems.

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) will examine the processes that support life on earth like the world’s grasslands, forests, rivers and lakes, farmlands, and oceans. The $21 million, four-year effort will involve 1,500 of the world’s leading scientists.

“The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment will map the health of our planet, and so fill important gaps in the knowledge that we need to preserve it,” said UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in launching the study. “All of us have to share the Earth’s fragile ecosystems and precious resources, and each of us has to play a role in preserving them. If we are to go on living together on this earth, we must all be responsible for it.” Read the full press release

Ecosystem Data to Guide Hard Choices

An international assessment of the impact of changes to ecosystems on the goods and services they provide will provide a foundation for wise policy-making.

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) will improve the management of the world’s natural and managed ecosystems by helping to meet the needs of decision-makers (in governments and the private sector) and the public for peer-reviewed, policy-relevant scientific information on the condition of ecosystems, consequences of ecosystem change, and options for response. The MA will provide information and also build human and institutional capacity to provide information. A diverse group of experts from the natural and social sciences, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector will undertake the assessment over a four year period, beginning in April 2001. Welcome To Our New Website

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment’s website has been updated and redesigned from the ground up.

The Millennium Assessment website has been totally redesigned and updated. This new site makes its debut just as work officially begins on designing the assessment itself. As the MA moves forward, we anticipate that this site will continue to grow and evolve. This website will become the primary connection among the various Working Groups of the assessment, but will also hopefully become an excellent source of information for anyone interested in ecosystem assessment design, or become an educational aid for those wanting to learn about ecosystem health. Your comments about this site are welcome at any time, and should be directed to the Communications and Outreach Committee. email
