Long before the 19th century, there were pre-Buddhist writings where several Himalayan peoples spoke of a long-haired, white ape creature whose roar was indescribable.

Over time, these stories about that legendary figure have ended up in one name: Yeti. It happened in the 1920s when a contributor to an Indian newspaper (written in English) interviewed a group of explorers returning from Everest.

The explorers spoke of huge footprints on the mountain that their guides attributed to a creature, “Metoh-Kangmi. As a result, the journalist thought “Abominable Snowman” sounded great in his article. So, although they’re different names, they’re the same legend.

Not so with Bigfoot, in this case, a different beast, mainly because of its location. While the Yeti belongs to Asia, Bigfoot is believed to originate (its legend) from North America, specifically from the Pacific Northwest.

In the 1830s, there were stories of hikers who claimed to have seen with their guides a bipedal creature, tall and covered with long hair. At that time, it was concluded that it was an orangutan.

For years, mountaineer Reinhold Messner searched for traces of the Yeti. Today he is convinced that the Snowman is a bear.

In the Himalayas lives a bear species, the Tibetan collar bear. According to Messner, the snow bear has captured people’s imagination, so that they came up with the legendary figure of the Yeti.

However, the original inhabitants of the Himalayas, the Sherpa, consider the Yeti to be a demonic being. They think that he only appears to people who believe in spirits.
