Since its official birth in April 1946 in the Piaggio workshops in Pontedera, it has undergone very few changes. Even today, most of its aesthetic and mechanical characteristics are the original ones.

After the success achieved in Italy at the end of 1947, it quickly penetrated foreign markets: France, Spain, Germany, Greece, the United States, Asia, and South America.

After the war, it played a central role in the mass motorization of all those countries where automobiles were still too expensive for the working classes.

At the same time, it also stands out as a consumer good with more “immaterial” properties. The Italian scooter becomes the symbol of the “economic miracle”, conveying images of freedom, seduction, sportiness, and youth.

The Piaggio company itself describes this innovation as an unprecedented revolutionary novelty, and above all, as the result of a unique synergy between owner-entrepreneur Enrico Piaggio and aeronautical engineer Corradino D’Ascanio.

From the end of the war, the first had an intuition of the need for an economical moped. In contrast, the second designed the prototype in just a few months, which was immediately inserted into the factory’s production line.

The Vespa was born from the meeting of two stories. The first is an industrial sector in which the company from Pontedera was inserted. The second is the social trajectory of the inventor.
