The reindeer has a more robust body and shorter legs than other members of the deer family. They measure from 60 centimeters to 1.5 meters up to the height of the withers (shoulder) and can weigh up to 320 kilos. Their dense coat can be brown, grey, or whitish, and their feet have broad hooves.

The reindeer live in herds that cross long distances between their winter and summer habitat. They feed on grass and other plants, as well as a species of lichen known as “reindeer moss”.

Reindeer are herbivorous animals, i.e., they feed only on vegetables such as grass, bushes, and lichens. They usually show a selective behavior when feeding, choosing plants with floral buds and unfolded leaves.

In winter, it is common for these animals to feed on lichens, which are rich in carbohydrates. Mating takes place in autumn—the males fight for the females to mate. Females usually give birth to one cub at a time.

Some people, like the Lapps in northern Europe, keep reindeer herds to pull sleds on snow, feed on their flesh and milk, and make clothing out of their skin.

We know that in popular culture, Santa’s sleigh is pulled by reindeer, which in this story is flying. The flying ability of these reindeer ensures that all presents are delivered in time for all children on Christmas Eve.

Santa’s sleigh is pulled by nine reindeer, the one named Rudolph standing out. This reindeer has a red and bright nose to guide other reindeer during storms. Santa’s nine reindeer are Rudolph, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen.
