The groundhog is an animal that belongs to the group of rodents. They live in the lands north of the equator.

They are found in the United States, Canada, Europe, near the Alps, and some areas north of the Himalayas in Asia.
They make their home in the plains, in mountainous meadows and at the edge of the forests. The groundhog usually lives in prairies, mountainous meadows and forest borders.
The groundhog has a bulky body. It measures from 30 to 60 centimeters long and weighs between 3 and 7 kilos. The tail is about one-third the length of the body.
Groundhogs have thick hair, small ears, and a short tail. Its sturdy legs and claws are made for digging the earth. The hair of the marmots can be yellowish, reddish, or brown. The Groundhogs that live in colder regions have denser hair.
Although they can swim and climb trees, marmots spend most of their time on or under the ground. Their complex burrow system has more than one entrance and several tunnels that lead to the rooms.
The rooms are used as nests or as toilets. The marmots take shelter in the burrows even in summer. When a groundhog realizes the danger, it emits a warning winch, and all the surrounding marmots hide in their holes.
Groundhogs are known for building complex underground burrow systems. During the winter, the marmots hibernate in the burrows.
Hibernation is a period of inactivity that can last many weeks. When hibernating, the groundhog breathes slowly, and its heart beats only a few times a minute.
The body temperature drops, almost reaching the freezing point. The groundhog may wake up several times during the winter to eliminate residues, but it does not eat anything.
This lasts all winter when it survives the fat stored in the body, extracted from food consumed in summer and fall.
Groundhogs feed on grasses and other vegetables, such as fruits and grains. Like other animals in the squirrel family, it can sit upright and use its front paws like hands to hold food.
Some species of a groundhog prefer to live alone. Most, however, are more social, living in colonies with many other animals, usually members of the same family. This is the case, for example, with the groundhog.
