You can find giraffes in most of sub-Saharan Africa, and their sighting is quite easy during a safari trip. The skin of giraffes is covered with darker spots. The patch’s color varies from orange to almost black and depends on a variety of factors, including subspecies, sex, and age.
It is also exceptionally thick, which protects them from the thorns of the acacia. Other particular adaptations include the nostrils, which can close against sandstorms or insects, and the prehensile tongue.

A typical characteristic of giraffes are the short ‘horns’ they have on the head. These horns are ossified cartilage covered with skin and hair.
Giraffes are easily recognizable thanks to their unusually long neck. They are the tallest animals on Earth, with the male being up to 6 meters tall (5.8 m). Usually, the males are taller than the females and have an average height going from 4 to 5,5 m, while the average height of the females is about 3,5-4,5 m.
Being such a tall animal, even only for performing the main vital functions, it needs some particular genetic adaptations. Having the neck so much elongated, it needs a powerful musculature for supporting it.
Also, the giraffe has to fight with gravity. It is equipped with a complex network of veins and blood vessels capable of pushing the blood upwards to the brain and, at the same time, capable of preventing the blood from flowing out of the brain too quickly when it lowers its head.
This means that the blood pressure of the giraffe is twice as high as that of other mammals and requires a beautifully powerful heart. The giraffe’s heart is the largest of all land mammals and can weigh up to 11 kilograms.
