The flower is connected to the branch with a stem or peduncle through which the lymphatic vessels pass. If it is missing, the flower is said to be sessile.

The reproductive part inside the calyx and corolla is made up of male and female reproductive elements: the stamens and one or more pistils, respectively.

The set of male structures is called androecium (set of stamens), that of the gynoecium female structures (set of pistils). Each stamen is formed by two parts: a sterile filament and an anther divided into pollen bags where the male gametes (pollen granules) are produced.

The pistil is divided into three parts: the stigma, sterile and sticky, on which the pollen granules are glued; the stylus, also pure, elongated, and thin, which can sometimes be missing and which connects the stigma to the ovary.

It is shaped like a flask and produces and contains one or more female gametes or eggs. The stigma and ovary are never missing. When both stamens and one or more pistils (i.e., both reproductive organs) are present in the same flower, the flower is called hermaphrodite.

When the stamens are separated from the pistil, i.e., they are found in different flowers on the same plant, the flower is called unisexual, and the plant is monoecious.

If unisexual flowers grow on different plants (male and female), then these are called dioecious. Some flowers grow so grouped on the stem that they appear as a single element:

They are the inflorescences, which take different names depending on the arrangement of the individual flowers on the axis that supports them all.
