Eagles have huge eyes. On average, they account for about 15% of the weight of the head. So the movement of these birds’ eyes is minimal.

They cannot move their eyeballs up, down, left, and right in the same way as humans. The eagles then need to move their heads to change their looks.

Daytime raptor species can see in color. This evolutionary adaptation allows these birds to detect the position of their prey from a simple urine trail.

As if it weren’t enough to have a practically impeccable sight, eagles also listen very well. They can hear over long distances and distinguish the sound of another raptor bird or potential prey.

Some species that inhabit denser forests, such as the harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja) and the forest falcons (Micrastur spp), have feathers around the ears with parabolic function, directing the sound to the opening of the ears.

The eagle’s beak is perhaps the characteristic that differentiates it most from other birds. The kind of prey that prey usually hunts is what will determine the beak’s shape.

Thus, smaller species (Falco sparverius) have a short beak, as they are used to eating insects and small rodents. On the other hand, the harpy has a massive and powerful beak, used to pull large pieces of meat from its prey.

The hawk has a particular diet. Its beak is long and curved, very useful to extract the snails from the inside of the shells.

The primary weapon used by eagles to attack their victims is their claws. Strong and sharp, the shape and size of the claws will also vary according to the type of prey that a particular species usually consumes.

Species that hunt mammals, such as the grey eagle or the harpy eagle, usually have thick tarsos, short fingers, and strong nails. Eagles that catch other birds have long toes and thin claws, ideal for the attack in flight.

The fishing eagle (Pandion haliaetus), in turn, has rough calluses on its fingers, which helps to hold the slippery fish during the attack.

Also, this species can move the fourth finger back, leaving two fingers forward and two behind. This reduces friction during the “dive” against the prey.
