Alligators live there mainly in the freshwater of lakes, pools, slow-flowing rivers, and swamps. They are inhabitants of the coastal areas, and therefore they tolerate somewhat brackish water when needed.

However, alligators cannot survive for long in saltwater, like some crocodiles, because they cannot secrete the salt from their bodies.

Alligators are less dangerous for people like crocodiles. Although they will attack instinctively if they feel threatened, they are relatively shy animals that are more likely to flee if a human comes near them.

The name alligator is probably derived from the Spanish ‘El Lagarto’ meaning (giant) lizard. Because alligators are relatively often kept on crocodile farms and in zoos, a lot is known about these crocodile creatures.

The alligator is classified among reptiles within the animal kingdom. Within this “family” of reptiles fall beside the alligator, the crocodiles, Caymans, and Gavials.

The alligator has a short and broad muzzle. Besides, alligators and caimans are easily recognizable by the teeth. These protrude only over the lower jaw. In crocodiles over the lower and upper jaw.

The length of the two species is quite different. Whereas an adult Mississippi alligator male can reach a range of 4 to 5 meters, the Chinese alligator reaches a maximum length of 1.5 meters.
